Game Room Tables

The best pool table brands

Brand tells you what the table is made of and who will answer the phone in year three. Five names worth buying, and what each is genuinely good at.

Updated October 2026 · By Stephen V.

Barrington is the best pool table brand for a home game room, and the Arlington 8-foot is the table to buy from it. Barrington builds the widest range at the sizes houses actually use, ships tables with the accessory set included, and is the name you will find parts and cloth for in five years. Fat Cat is the brand to buy for a 7-foot room, Hathaway for a multi-game or bumper pool table, GoSports for value at 8 feet, and Mizerak for a room that is genuinely too small for a 7-footer.

Brand matters more in this category than in most, for an unglamorous reason: a pool table is a ten-year purchase with consumable parts. Cloth wears. Cushions harden. Pockets tear. The brands worth buying are the ones whose tables you can still get cloth, rails and replacement pockets for when that happens, and whose dimensions are published accurately enough that you can plan a room around them.

What brand does not tell you is bed material, and that is the spec that decides how the table plays. Most home tables from every brand here use an MDF bed; slate is a step up in price and weight across the board. Treat brand as a question about range, accuracy and support, and treat slate-versus-MDF as a separate decision — our high-quality pool table guide covers that side.

We have not tested these tables. The ranking is built from each brand's published dimensions, bed and cushion descriptions, included accessories, warranty terms and range breadth, plus owner-review consensus reported as other people's experience — see how we pick. Prices come live from Amazon with the date we verified them.

Skip this

The budget traps that look cheap and cost you twice. We'd skip these.

  • Unbranded tables with no published bed or cushion specification

A pool table listing that names no brand and describes neither the bed material nor the cushion type is telling you what it is. Cloth and cushions are consumables; without a brand you cannot buy replacements cut to fit, and re-clothing becomes a custom job that costs more than the table did.

  • Assuming the premium club brands are available like this

The names serious players talk about — the slate, hand-built, dealer-installed tables — are not sold as mail-order flat-packs and do not carry a price you can look up online. If that is the table you want, contact a dealer for a quote on your room and your floor rather than trusting any number on the internet.

How to choose (and what to skip)

Brand tells you about parts, not play

What a brand actually buys you is published dimensions you can plan around, cloth and pockets you can still order in year five, and someone to call when a rail bolt strips. How the table plays comes down to bed material, cushion quality and leveling — all of which vary within a brand's own range. Pick the brand for support, then pick the model for the specs.

Size decides the shortlist before brand does

Work out which sizes fit your room first — table footprint plus about 5 feet on every side for a 57-inch cue. If only 7 feet fits, Fat Cat and Hathaway are your shortlist. If 8 fits, Barrington and GoSports come in. If nothing over 6.5 feet fits, it is Mizerak or a bumper pool table. Brand is the second question, not the first.

Count what is in the box

Cues, balls, a rack, chalk, a bridge and a brush add up to real money bought separately. Barrington and GoSports include accessory sets; others do not always. A table that is fifty dollars dearer with a 24-piece kit included is the cheaper purchase, and it is also playable the day it is assembled.

Check the warranty term and what it covers

Most home tables carry a limited warranty on the frame and rails and nothing on the cloth, which is correct — cloth is a wear item. What is worth reading is whether the bed is covered against warping, since that is the failure that cannot be repaired. A brand that covers the bed is telling you something about the bed.

Plan the route into the room

Every table here arrives in heavy flat boxes, and an 8-foot table's rails and bed sections do not turn tight basement corners. Measure doorways and stair turns before ordering. This is the single most common reason a pool table purchase goes wrong, and it has nothing to do with which brand you chose.

Who makes the best pool tables for a home?

For a flat-packed home table in 2026, Barrington has the broadest and best-specified range at the sizes houses use, and GLD Products — the group behind Fat Cat, Mizerak and Viper — has the deepest parts support. Hathaway owns the convertible and multi-game end, including the bumper pool and shuffleboard tables we rank first elsewhere on this site. GoSports is the value entrant. Those four groups cover essentially every home pool table worth buying at this price level.

The brands that enthusiasts name when asked who makes the best pool tables — the hand-built slate makers — are a different market: dealer-sold, professionally installed, and priced accordingly. They are the right answer to "best pool table in the world" and the wrong answer to "which table should I order for my basement".

What changes between brands, and what does not

What changes: range of sizes, whether accessories are included, how accurate the published dimensions are, warranty terms, and how easy replacement cloth and pockets are to find. What mostly does not change at this price: the bed is MDF, the cushions are molded rubber, and the table will need leveling with shims on a real floor. Any brand comparison that implies otherwise is overstating the difference.

Brand by buyer

First table, normal basement: Fat Cat at 7 feet, or Barrington if 8 fits. Room has to do two things: Hathaway. Tightest budget at 8 feet: GoSports. Room is genuinely small: Mizerak, or move to bumper pool. You know you will get good: skip all of the above and get a quote on a slate table from a dealer, because the ceiling on an MDF bed is lower than your ambition.

The consumables nobody budgets for

Cloth is the big one: a heavily played table wants re-clothing every few years, and it is a documented job that costs a fraction of the table. Tips wear, chalk runs out, and pockets eventually tear. A cover is the cheapest thing you can buy to slow all of it down — dust and sunlight do more damage to cloth than play does. Our pool table setup guide covers leveling and first-year care.

Does brand affect resale?

Yes, modestly. A named-brand table with its accessories and a known model number sells second-hand; an unbranded one is usually given away. Since a home pool table often outlives the room it was bought for, that is worth a few dollars at purchase time — another reason the brands with long histories and findable parts are the safer buy.

The fixture over the table

Whichever brand you land on, most home tables arrive with no dedicated light, and a single ceiling fitting leaves a shadow beside every ball. Our pool table light roundup covers the three and four-shade fixtures, the two-thirds sizing rule and the hanging height that stops glare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pool table brand?
For a flat-packed home table, Barrington — the widest range at the sizes houses use, accessories included, and dimensions you can plan a room around. GLD Products' brands (Fat Cat, Mizerak, Viper) have the best long-term parts support, and Hathaway is the brand to buy if you need the table to convert to another game.
Who makes the best pool tables?
At the home flat-pack level, Barrington, GLD Products (Fat Cat and Mizerak) and Hathaway. The hand-built slate tables players name as the best in the world come from specialist makers sold through dealers with professional installation, not as online purchases — if that is what you want, get a dealer quote for your room rather than trusting an online price.
Are expensive pool tables worth it?
The money buys a slate bed, better cushions and professional leveling, and those are what make a table roll true for decades. If you play often or seriously, yes. If the table is for occasional games with guests, an MDF table from a good brand plays well enough and costs a fraction as much.
Does pool table brand affect how it plays?
Less than the specs do. Bed material, cushion quality and how well the table is leveled decide play, and all three vary within a single brand's range. Use brand to judge range, published accuracy, warranty and parts availability; use the model's specification to judge play.
Which brand should I buy for a 7-foot room?
Fat Cat or Hathaway. Both build the 7-foot size properly, both have real parts support behind them, and Fat Cat's automatic ball return is the single feature that makes a home table more pleasant to use day to day. Confirm your room gives about 17 by 13 feet before ordering.
Can I get replacement cloth and parts for these brands?
For Barrington, Hathaway and the GLD brands, generally yes — cloth, pockets and rail hardware are available years after purchase, which is the main practical reason to buy a named brand. Unbranded tables are the ones where a torn pocket turns into a custom job.
