How we pick — the spec-scoring method

Most “best budget X” lists rank products on a hidden gut feeling and a star rating that never gets explained. Ours works differently. Every category is scored on a small set of specs that genuinely decide whether gear lasts, performs, and fits the room you have — and we show the reasoning on every pick.

1. We start with the specs that matter

For each category we pick four to six metrics that separate good budget gear from junk, and we score every product on them (out of 10):

• Game tables: play-bed material (slate vs laminated wood), cabinet and leg construction, leg levelers, the floor space needed with a full cue, and what ships in the box.
• Darts: wire gauge and how it is mounted, staple-free bullseye, sisal density, and whether wall protection is included.
• Ice makers: ice type, rated output per 24 hours, reservoir and side-tank capacity, whether the machine stores ice, and the drain requirement.
• Fridges & kegerators: compressor vs thermoelectric, temperature range, zone count, built-in vs freestanding venting, and realistic capacity.
• Bar gear & glassware: seal reliability, capacity, jigger graduations, glass shape against the drink, and set size.
• Stools & carts: seat height against counter height, swivel, footrest, weight rating, and shelf clearance for a 750 ml bottle.

The overall score is a weighted blend of those, with fit weighted heaviest wherever floor space or a cabinet opening decides whether the product can be used at all.

2. We do the room math, and the real cost

Most of the regret in this category is dimensional, not financial. So we publish the clear floor a table needs with a full cue, the seat height that fits a given counter, the cabinet opening an appliance requires, and the shelf clearance a bottle needs — and we state when accessories a listing leaves out are real money on top of the sticker price.

3. We verify prices live and date them

Every price on this site comes straight from Amazon's live data and is stamped with the date we last verified it. If a price is older than our freshness window, it disappears and the button reads “Check price on Amazon” instead of showing a stale number. We never type a price in by hand.

4. We read owner consensus — labeled as others' experience

We read through owner reviews for recurring, verifiable patterns (a blower that fades, a cap that sticks when chilled, assembly that fights back) and report them as other owners' experience, never as our own hands-on testing.

What we don't do

We don't run a lab, and we don't pretend to. Units we claim to have hands-on tested: zero. Free products accepted: zero. Sponsored placements: zero. Everyone in this space claims a test bench; we compete on something you can actually verify — published specs, transparent math, and cited sources. If a number here is wrong, you can catch it.
