A treadmill, if impact is the actual problem
Walking is far gentler than running, but it is still impact, and impact is the specific thing being avoided here. If a treadmill is what you want anyway, walking on one at a low speed is usually tolerable — but it should be a considered choice rather than the default, and it should not be the machine you buy to protect a knee.
