Why concrete needs a layer at all
A bare slab is hard, cold, and slightly damp — a bad surface for lifting for three reasons:

- It's hard on joints — standing and lifting on an unforgiving surface transmits shock straight into your ankles, knees, and back.

Foam tiles (the cheap interlocking kind)
Foam is cheap, light, and comfortable underfoot — great for a stretching corner, yoga, or bodyweight work. But it compresses permanently under a rack's feet and offers almost no protection when a loaded barbell comes down. Under heavy weight it dents, tears, and telegraphs the load straight through to the concrete. Foam is a comfort layer, not a lifting surface.
Rubber (mats and interlocking tiles)
Rubber is the workhorse. It's dense enough to protect both the slab and your plates when weight lands, stays put under a rack, and grips well. Horse-stall mats (the roughly three-quarter-inch rubber mats sold at farm-supply stores) are the classic budget hero — heavy, thick, and cheap per square foot. Interlocking rubber tiles cost a bit more but are easier to carry and cut. Either way, rubber is what goes where the barbell and rack live.

Where the weight actually lands
You don't need to cover the whole floor in thick rubber — you need it where the load concentrates. Think in zones:

- The rack feet — concentrated point loads; rubber here stops the feet from cracking the slab and keeps the rack from walking.
- The rest of the floor — walking and accessory space can be thin rubber or foam, or left as sealed concrete.

The moisture and vapor note nobody mentions
Concrete slabs — especially basement and garage floors poured on grade — wick moisture up from the ground. Seal a non-breathable rubber mat directly onto a damp slab and moisture can get trapped underneath, leading to musty smells, mildew, and rust on the underside of equipment. Two cheap habits prevent it:
- Do a plastic-sheet test — tape a square of plastic sheeting to the slab for a day or two; condensation underneath means the slab is passing moisture and you should plan for it.
- Give it a path to dry — leave small gaps at the edges, lift mats occasionally to air out, or add a thin vapor barrier / sealed floor paint under the mats in damp spaces. Don't glue everything down airtight over a slab you haven't checked.
A budget floor plan that works
- Check the slab for moisture with the plastic-sheet test; seal or add a vapor barrier if it's damp.
- Lay thick rubber (stall mats or heavy tiles) under and in front of the rack — your lifting zone.
- Use cheaper foam or thin rubber for stretching and accessory areas.
- Leave edges able to breathe rather than gluing everything airtight.
