Budget Racks

Cheap squat racks & stands that won't tip over

When a full cage won't fit or the budget won't stretch, these are the stands and half-racks we'd trust — with the one rule that keeps them safe.

Updated July 2026 · By Stephen V.

Not every room fits a 4x4-foot cage, and not every budget stretches to one. A squat stand or half-rack is the cheaper, smaller answer — but it's also the category with the most genuinely unsafe products. The rule that separates a good cheap stand from a scary one is simple: enough base weight (or a bolt-down) to stay planted, and ideally a spotter to catch a failed rep. Here are the ones we'd buy, ranked, plus the trap stands to avoid.

Skip this

The budget traps that look cheap and cost you twice. We'd skip these.

  • Sub-$50 telescoping single stands with narrow feet

The narrowest, lightest stands are the ones that walk and tip mid-set. If it weighs less than a couple of your plates, it belongs under a light press, not a heavy squat.

How to choose (and what to skip)

Base weight and bolt-down

The single biggest safety factor on a stand is whether it stays planted. Bolt it to the slab or weight the base with plates; a light, un-anchored stand is where accidents happen.

Safeties or a spotter

Without internal safety arms, you have no way to bail a failed squat. Either buy a frame with safeties, keep the weight submaximal, or use spotter arms.

Height range for your lifts

Check that the uprights adjust low enough for bench and high enough for a comfortable squat unrack. A stand that only fits one height limits your program.

Frequently asked questions

Are cheap squat stands safe?
They can be, within limits. Bolt them down or weight the base, keep the working weight sensible, and don't max out without safeties or a spotter. A stand with no way to catch a failed rep is fine for pressing and moderate squats, risky for max effort.
Squat stand or a full power cage?
If you can fit a cage, it's the safer, better-value pick for solo training — often only ~$100 more than a good stand. Choose a stand only when floor space genuinely rules a cage out, and then anchor it.
